Hi, I'm Josh Patterson, co-founder of The Silk Flower Studio. My journey into the world of artificial flowers began during my time in the film industry, where I worked as a Greensman for over a decade, crafting landscapes and sets for major feature films like The Lord of the Rings, The Last Samurai, and Avatar. Working in the film industry exposed me to the extensive use of silk flowers and foliage, especially in challenging indoor studio conditions. These silk creations needed to remain lifelike and consistent for the camera despite the lack of natural light and water.

I was amazed at the complexity and the artistry that went into making each silk flower as every item is expertly crafted with handmade moulds of every petal and leaf – I was just blown away at the attention to detail required to make each product.  I could appreciate that these people were true craftsman

As our involvement in the film industry continued, the demands of the job made it clear that it wouldn't align well with our family life after the birth of our second child. We knew it was time for a change. In 2005, we made a bold decision to step away from the film industry and take a leap of faith, establishing our own business.

Though we didn’t know exactly where we were headed with this, we had a strong belief that people would appreciate the beauty and realism of silk flowers as much as we did. With that conviction, we embarked on this new journey & have been supplying NZ with silk flowers & foliage for the past 18 years.  

Looking back, we are grateful for the risks we took and the path we chose. The Silk Flower Studio has become a place where our love for artistry and dedication to crafting exquisite silk flowers come to life.
